THE CAPITAL The cornerstone was laid by President Washington onSeptember 18, 1793. In 1800, the first section was completed and 32 Senators and 106 Representatives moved from Philadelphia to occupy the new Capital. British troops burned the building in 1814 and by 1819 the North and South wings were restored. The imposing cast iron dome , replacing the old wooden one, was completed during the Civil War as a symbol of the strength and unity of the country.
