Awards & Honors 1979 Spiel des Jahres Recommended TWIXT is the brilliant battle of barriers that challenges your wit and tactical thinking. It is a stimulating battle of strategic skill, with every play a climatic turning point! Main object: Try to connect your borders with an uninterrupted chain of linked pegs- and block your rival's attempts to stop you! TWIXT is for all ages- two players, or four players in teams of two. Handsome, leather-like bookshelf case contains big 16"x16" fold-away board, pegs, links and complete instructions. Twixt is a 2-player abstract game invented by Alex Randolph. The object of TwixT is to form a path connecting something to something else. This requires very different thinking from the standard battle-type game such as chess or checkers. Some old US sets mention a 4-player variant, with 2 teams as in Bridge, but this probably wasn't Randolph's idea. The game was popular in the 60s and 70s as part of the 3M Bookshelf Series. Avalon Hill then acquired the series and issued the game themselves. Several European publishers have sold the game as well. Twixt employs a pegboard, pegs and links. The playing surface is a 24x24 square pegboard, usually minus the corner holes, with two opposite sides marked with one player's color and the other two sides marked with the other player's color. Each player has a supply of pegs and links of their color. 50 of each piece type of each color, a total of 200, is an ample supply. Players alternate turns placing pegs and links, if possible, in attempt to have a continuous path of links connecting the two sides of the board with their color. After the 3M edition, Randolph added the pie rule. After the first peg is placed, the opponent has the option to swap sides. This reduces the imbalance from the first move advantage. On your turn you place one peg of your color on the board, and then add or rearrange your color links. Pegs may be placed in any vacant hole in the board except the corners and the last row on the sides of the opposing player. When two pegs of the same color are at opposite corners of a six hole rectangle (3x2 or 2x3), a link may be placed between those two pegs. Links may not be placed such that they cross other links. Multiple links may be added on a single move. Usually, all links are to the peg just placed, but on your move you are allowed to remove as many of your own links as you wish, and add your own links anywhere on the board as long as they are legal as described here. When a player connects his two sides with a continuous path of links, he prevents his opponent from doing the same, the game is over, and the player connecting his two sides wins the game. If neither side can complete such a path, the game is a draw. BOARDGAMEGEEK REVIEWS: 10 One of my very favorite 2-player abstracts. Simple rules, great depth. 7 Tense and tactical. 10 As an abstract, it's fun to discover various moves. Not as difficult as Go so you can finish in 10 -20 minutes. I enjoy it. 9 I spent a long time studying before I was able to not lose immediately. Blocking is really difficult and not so intuitive, but once you understand how the tactics work, it becomes a very rewarding game to play. 8 Terrific classic abstract. Simple to learn, difficult to master mark of a great game. Underrated on BGG by people who don't recognize the genius of simple elegance in game design. Joins Santorini and Hive as my favorite abstract strategies. BGG Longer Review: “Twixt is not likely to go away for a long time. There will always be places to play, in virtual space if nowhere else. If you enjoy solving the puzzle positions that Twixt offers, I hope you continue to seek out opponents. I should add that I have played this game thousands of times, and hope to play thousands more. I have won four face to face tournaments, three in England and one in Lancaster PA.” BGG Longer Review: “Twixt is a fabulous game. Not too long ago I spent a few days in a nearby state visiting a friend of mine. I had recently purchased Twixt and was anxious to give it a try it. My friend has three teenage sons, all of whom enjoy playing board games. I brought Twixt along, thinking we all could give it a try and see what it was like. I'm very glad I did so since all four of us enjoyed it immensely! After we discovered Twixt, we didn't play anything else! Each game we played seemed to bring about new discoveries and ideas. Each game was exciting and often dramatic. An after each game we were all hungry for more and immediately wanted to play again. How's THAT for praise! Most all of our games lasted less than 30 minutes. Twixt is both strategical and tactical in nature. The first few games we played were much less strategical than the later ones, as we began to understand some of the subtleties the game has to offer. For many years Twixt was out of print. It was first published in the 1960s by 3M and then later by Avalon Hill. It was recently made available again by both Schmidt Spiele and Kosmos. As it is back in print, GAMES Magazine was able to reinstate it in their prestigious Hall of Fame! Whoo hoo! I regret not discovering Twixt sooner in life, but I do look forward to many enjoyable hours ahead, as I play, learn and study this fascinating game. It has a wonderful blend of the four qualities that help to give any abstract board game lasting value; depth, clarity, drama, and decisiveness. Every abstract strategy game fan simply must give Twixt a try.” AMAZON REVIEWER COMMENTS: 5/5 stars Great Game For Two! Great game for TWO PEOPLE! Love the mysterious surprises 5/5 stars Fairly young kids can learn to easily play, while making them 'think' Very interesting strategy game that can have you playing for hours. The object is to build a fence from one end of the game board to the other, while blocking your opponent from making it to their goal... There is a lot more to it than just putting in a peg and fence piece on each turn. Fairly young kids can learn to easily play, while making them 'think' about stopping the other person too. I remember the hours of fun I had when I was a kid playing this game. As long as all the pieces are there, I would consider picking up a used game as the new ones are rather pricey. Kinda think of checkers meets chess meets an erector set.... This is mainly a 2 player game, but 4 can play too. The game is very addictive (or it was to us as kids and young adults), so plan on having extra soda, coffee, beer or wine on hand... you'll need it. LOL Hope this helps some. 5/5 stars Used game, great shape Better than I expected. Great and out of print, which is why I wanted another. 5/5 stars Awesome family game Perfect!!! I am so excited to receive this! I grew up playing it with my dad who has the original back home so I wanted to share the frustration with my kids, hahahaha! 5/5 stars Great game! The rules and game play are simple, and the strategy is as complex as your opponent. 5/5 stars Very Fun, always interesting, High replay value! Warning this game is extremely fun and addicting! Have played it over 20x and it is always different, depending on who your playing with, skill level and mood. No luck, only strategy. Simple rules place pegs and bridge to the other side, even young kids can understand and have fun. I have bought this for various groups and everyone has liked it. Wish it was still in production. It is a hidden gem. You don't have to be a game-wiz to like this game. Buy it and have fun! 5/5 stars Fun Fun Fun! Great game, makes you think while you play, which is what is sorely lacking in so many family games today. A very fun game. Boxed to look like a book so very appealing on a shelf. 5/5 stars TWIXT My husband and I loved to play this game when we were first married. I was looking for it for my daughter and fiance as a gift. They love the game as much as we did. 4/5 stars Fun! Fun strategy game I can play it with my eight-year-old son. 4/5 stars Intriguing! 4/5 stars Great Oldie!
