Description: Scarce early original vintage boudoir cabinet card photograph shows the summit view house at Pike’s Peak with the Pike’s Peak Cog Railroad approaching the top. A number of visitors can be seen standing at the top waiting for a ride down. The Broadmoor Manitou and Pikes Peak Cog Railway (also known as the Pikes Peak Cog Railway) is a cog railway that climbs one of the most iconic mountains in the United States, Pikes Peak in Colorado. The base station is in Manitou Springs, near Colorado Springs. Construction on the line was started in 1889 and the first train reached the summit on June 30, 1891. Cog railways are common in Switzerland and found in other parts of the world (totaling about 50 lines), but this is one of only three such lines remaining in the United States. William Hook settled in Manitou Springs, Colorado in 1885 to establish a successful photography business. He documented the early years of the Canadian Northwest Mounted Police, the Manitou and Pikes Peak Railway, and Cripple Creek. His passion for Native Americans, railroads and mining was evident in his work. Cabinet card measures 5 x 8 inches and is in good condition with the exception of a repaired crack to the lower right corner of the mount. The actual photograph has a bend but is still intact(see scans). The image is very sharp and has strong tones with good contrast and clarity.
