Description: HOPSEWEE PLANTATION GEORGETOWN SOUTH CAROLINA POSTCARD Historical Thomas Lynch Built circa 1740, some 40 years before the American Revolutionary War, Hopsewee Plantation was one of the South's major rice plantations and the birthplace of Thomas Lynch, Jr., one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence. Hopsewee is listed as a National Historic Landmark and is located off highway 17 on the North Santee River. This postcard shows the back section of Hopsewee Plantation House which faces King's Highway, or Highway 17 as we know it today. Since the primary mode of transportation in the 18th century in much of South Carolina was via water, the formal front entrance of this plantation home sits on a bluff facing the North Santee River.
