Description: A Federal issue “Eagle” plate worn on the shoulder strap which helped with the weight of the cartridge box. The plate was excavated from the “Battle of Reams Station (Miles Division) Center of Union Line”. General Miles 1st Division was part of General Hancock’s 2nd Corp. This is part of a collection found by Mr. Williams, the tag on the back of the box is his original. He started relic hunting in the 1950’s and like my father and I recorded the locations of where the relics were found. The plate depicts a patriotic eagle, and was used by the Federal army as well as the Northern states. The shoulder plate is round following the Federal Regulation of 1826. Most of these were manufactured from the1850's through the end of the Civil War. The two iron hooks that once held it to the leather strap have rusted away. The two Federal issue “Eagle” buttons were in a box labeled “Petersburg” but no specific location. The Battle of Ream's Station was fought during the siege of Petersburg on August 25, 1864, in Dinwiddie County, Virginia. A Union force under Maj. Gen. Winfield S. Hancock began destroying part of the Petersburg Railroad, which was a vital supply line for Gen. Robert E. Lee's Confederate army in Petersburg, Virginia. Lee sent a force under Lt. Gen. A. P. Hill to challenge Hancock and the Confederates were able to rout the Union troops from their fortifications at Reams Station. However, they lost a key portion of the railroad, causing further logistical difficulties for the remainder of the Richmond-Petersburg Campaign. The artifacts come as shown in a 6” x 8” riker style case. The original case was in bad shape, I have cut the tag that was on the bottom off and it will be included. All of the artifacts are guaranteed to be original as stated. A hand signed and dated “Certificate of Authenticity” will be issued by Collectors Frame with a photograph and description of the items purchased. Write ups as pictures will also be included.
