Description: LISTED HERE A MAGNIFICENT LARGE MOUNTED PRINT FROM THE ORIGINAL LITHOGRAPH OF 1846 EARLY DAYS OF STEAM RAILWAYS The terminus of the Great Western Railway at Bristol was the grandest of all the company's buildings. It was certainly the only station roof to be built to resemble a banqueting hall of the Tudor period, complete with imitation hammerbeams. As in most stations, it seems to have been customary to cover sleepers with earth to create as level a surface as possible between the tracks. A six-wheeled express locomotive of the massive proportions possible only on the Great Western is visible; all the rolling stock seems oddly proportioned as a result of the broad gauge. By 1848 there was some two hundred and fifty- miles of broad-gauge railway in operation.
